SOR 2009 In 2009 the Deep Earth Academy a teaching initiative of the US Consortium for Ocean Leadership gave teachers the possibility to partake at an scientific ocean drilling research expedition.
The School of Rock took place from June 23rd to July 05th, 2009.

2 Teachers from ECORD, the European partner in IODP, took part at this event:
Jean-Luc Berenguer from France and Pereira Helder from Portugal.
The full list of particpants can be found here.

    Teachers Workshop

ECORD sponsored a one-day teacher's workshop "Exploring the ocean floor with the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program" during the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2007 in Vienna. Seventy teachers from 22 different countries registered for the ECORD workshop, which was organized in partnership with the annual EGU Geophysical Information For Teachers (GIFT) symposium.

The goal of the ECORD Workshop is to provide teachers with information and material that can be used in science classes for school students. Talks from IODP scientists illustrate the excitement found in ocean research drilling and highlight selected ocean drilling research topics with highly societal relevance such as
    • natural resources (gas hydrates),
    • natural hazards (earthquakes, volcanic activity, undersea landslides and tsunamis), and
    • natural climate variation (growth and decline of ice sheets and sea level change).

The ECORD teachers workshop also introduced the teachers to the highly specialized IODP research vessels, that drill sediment and rock cores for scientific studies, and informed about current expeditions.
