ESSAC Subcommittees

 
  In October 2007, 3 subcommittees have been established in order to increase and facilitate discussion and collaboration between the 17 country members. The subcommittees, their members and their tasks are the following:

1) The Staffing and Nominations Subcommittee:
Lucas Lourens (Coordinator, NL), Ruediger Stein (ESSAC Chair, D), Jeannette Lezius (ESSAC Science Coordinator, D), Judith McKenzie (CH), Rachael H. James (UK), Fatima Abrantes (P), Neil Banerjee (CDN).
Former members: Chris MacLeod (UK), Henk Brinkhuis (NL).

General tasks:
  • Suggest nominations of ECORD representatives on SAS (Science Advisory Structure) panels, PPGs and DPGs.
  • Co-ordinate applications, review all the applications and suggesting nominations of shipboard participants.
  • Review the quota of shipboard scientists between participating countries.
  • Suggest co-chief nominations for IODP Expeditions.


2) The Education and Outreach Subcommittee:
Xavier Monteys (Coordinator, IRL), Ruediger Stein (ESSAC Chair, D), Jeannette Lezius (ESSAC Science Coordinator, D), Ian Snowball (S), Werner Piller (AU), Marit-Solveig Seidenkrantz (DK), Rudy Swennen (B).
Former members: Michael Riedel (CDN), Brian McConnell (IRL), Paul Martin Holm (DK), Eve Arnold (S), Kathy Gillis (CDN).

General tasks:
  • Develop educational opportunities/programs: e.g. Teacher's workshops, Summer Schools etc., especially in non-traditional audiences.
  • Review Summer School proposals.
  • Review applications and suggesting nominations for ECORD scholarships.
  • Provide new ideas regarding ways to raise funds for E&O activities.
  • Advise on the public outreach (societal relevance of the IODP science).


3) The Workshops, Communication and Vision Subcommittee:
Eliasbetta Erba (Coordinator, I), Ruediger Stein (ESSAC Chair, D), Jeannette Lezius (ESSAC Science Coordinator, D), Kari Strand (FIN), Bryndís Brandsdottir (ISL), Nalan Koc (N) Menchu Comas (E).
Former members: Marco Sacchi (I), Rolf Pedersen (N).

General tasks:
  • Initiate and monitor workshops.
  • Review applications for participation to IODP workshops and suggest nominations.
  • Initiate applications of speakers for the Distinguished Lecturer Series (DLP) and suggest nominations.
  • Assist and advise on extending the scientific base of the consortium to non-member countries.
  • Provide stimulation and guidance for the writing of drilling proposals in accordance with the IODP Initial Science Plan (ISP) and encouragement of IODP-related activities among participating countries.
  • Looking for gaps in the science spanned by the active proposals relative to the themes and initiatives specified in the Initial Science Plan (ISP).
